Physiatrist
Pronunciation: "fi-zE-'a-trist
A doctor who specializes in physical medicine and rehabiliation is called a
physiatrist. Physiatrists are responsible for the physical rehabilitation of post
traumatically injured individuals or people suffering from several types of chronic
illnesses. They care for patients with both acute and chronic pain, and musculoskeletal
problems. In addition, they treat people who have suffered injuries associated with sports, as
well as those who have experienced catastrophic events which result in paraplegia, quadriplegia,
or traumatic brain injury; and individuals who have had strokes, orthopedic injuries, or
neurologic disorders such as multiple sclerosis, polio, or ALS. Furthermore, physiatrists
frequently act as consultants to other medical disciplines.
